A rain barrel system consists of a large drum or barrel, PVC or brass couplings, vinyl hose, and a screen or grate to keep debris and insects out. A rain barrel can be incorporated into the stormwater management of virtually any building of any size with an external downspout. There are several environmental and economic reasons for using rain barrels. Any rain that is removed from the stormwater system serves to lower the cost required for construction and maintenance of off-site treatment systems as well as decreasing the amount of sewage released by Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). Rainwater harvested and stored in rain barrels is soft, warm compared to tap water, and oxygen-filled, making it ideal for watering lawns, gardens and potted plants. This is not only an environmentally sound practice it also saves property owners money on water bills. Rain barrels typically range in size from 55 to 75 gallons. Several barrels can be linked in series to increase storage capacity. Rain barrels can be inexpensively and easily constructed from recycled materials and/or those purchased from most hardware stores. You can also buy many different styles of rain barrels—including "designer" models—which typically cost between $75 and $150. Links >> Interested in installing a rain barrel?
