If you are NOT a D.C.
TreeKeeper Community member, you can still plant a tree! Here are some
other options you might pursue:
- D.C.
Urban Forestry Administration - 202-727-1000
To request that a city contractor plant trees on your block, please
contact the UFA, though it may take some time for your request to be
fulfilled. Please note: Contractor planted trees will not usually survive
unless neighbors water, weed, and mulch for at least two years after
planting.
- Plant
One Yourself (with a UFA permit) -
202-727-1000
The
D.C. Urban
Forestry Administration (UFA) grants street
tree planting permits from October through April. If
you would like to plant a street tree on your own,
you must receive a permit from
UFA,
and the
trees you plant must be species
UFA designates for your street.
The average street
tree has a 2-inch thick trunk, costs
about $150, and requires 2-3 adults to plant.
Please note: Due to utility locations, signs, alleys,
nearby trees, the quality of tree pit, or the width of the sidewalk,
it may not be possible to plant a tree near your house. Please see the UFA
Tree Planting Guidelines.

Casey
Trees Endowment -
202-833-4010
Casey Trees offers Citizen Forester training to D.C. residents, and also offers tree planting minigrants in communities that would like to plant a minimum of 10 trees. Casey also offers GIS neighborhood tree maps for interested residents who would like to see the status of the street trees in their communities.
Because
newly planted trees cannot establish themselves
in hot weather, trees can only be planted
in Washington, D.C. between Oct 1
and May 1. This
is policy for all tree-planting organizations in the area,
including D.C. Greenworks. If you have
a permit to plant a tree yourself, please
DO NOT plant between May 2 and September 30, or your new
tree may not survive. |
