MARCH 11, 2009 – Residents of a small, seaside community in
Charles County have erected a wind turbine
in
hopes of sparking renewed interest in green technology among their neighbors as
well as other county residents. Swan Point Homeowners Association President Ken
Robinson and his wife Dr. Sheryl Elliot have worked tirelessly for several
years to make their dream of having an active wind turbine on their property a
reality. The windmill will be providing their home with electricity
through renewable wind energy and at times they will be earning a credit on
their electric bills and actually be providing energy to the grid. A
costly initial investment of $23,000 was necessary, but Mr. Robinson will be
receiving federal incentives as well. Their costs were also
multiplied since the distance from their home where the windmill sits is in
excess of 500 feet. At this time, Mr. Robinson is now down from 15
cents per kilowatt hour to about 7.5 cents per kilowatt hour. The
location on their private island on Cuckold Creek is truly perfect for a
33-foot tall windmill, but other Swan Point residents are considering placing
smaller wind turbines on their docks. Mr. Robinson has truly been an
inspiration to this county by making green technology more accessible to other
residents.
