Why should healthy, happy trees matters to D.C. residents?

The life of an urban tree is hard. Urban trees face bumping, banging, trampling, pests, drought, pollution, abuse, and neglect every day. D.C. has more than 200,000 trees in public space that have no one to water, weed, and mulch them after planting to ensure their survival. As a result, many urban trees receive no attention until there is an emergency or they die and become an eyesore the city must pay to have removed.

Urban trees, like communities, have a far greater chance at health and success if there are folks looking after them. In fact, D.C.'s trees are absolutely dependent on committed neighbors like YOU for their survival.

D.C. TreeKeepers are members of an ever-growing, select group of D.C. residents who care deeply about their trees and their communities. D.C. Greenworks works with local TreeKeepers to ensure their trees continue to bring beauty and value to their neighborhood for years to come. As a D.C. TreeKeeper Community, you and your neighbors will receive the counsel and support you need for a successful tree adoption.

Through your TreeKeeper membership benefits, we make it easy for you to care for one street tree near your home for one year—with treecare guides, watering devices, training workshops, and more!

“The Eastenders worked with D.C. Greenworks to better our neighborhood in a fashion far expanding our wildest thoughts. This small endeavor to plant a few trees has beautified the neighborhood, brought new and old neighbors out of their houses and helped to develop a relationship with neighborhood organizations!”
