DC Greenworks Wins Nationwide Microsoft ACQUA Contest! DC Greenworks' statement on "largest sloping green roof collapse" On February 13, a section of the largest sloping green roof in North America collapsed. The building is the headquarters of Aquascape in St. Charles, Illinois. As of today the cause of the collapse has not been determined. A company official was reported as saying that the likely cause was an ice dam that prevented melting snow from draining off the roof. While this is unfortunate news that warrants close examination, damage from ice damming, including collapse, is not uncommon with sloped roofs of all types. Someone considering a green roof for their building or their home can go a long way toward ensuring safety by working with a qualified engineer to assess the building’s structural integrity and hiring a reputable contractor with green roof experience.Green roofs have proven to be safe and effective in applications across the country and around the world in all climate conditions.
